The precision of time
A mechanical timepiece is something very personal. Its busy ticking divides time into the smallest units. And its precision synchronizes our daily routine with our fellow human beings, whom we subtly call contemporaries. But scientists like Einstein have shaken our faith in time. Stephen Hawking explains in his book "A Brief History of Time" that until the 20th century we assumed that all good clocks showed the time interval between two events in a consistent manner. But the discovery that the speed of light appears the same to every observer, regardless of his own speed, led to the theory of relativity and thus to the abandonment of an absolute concept of time. According to this, every observer has his own measure of time, which is registered by a watch he carries with him.
Time thus became a personal concept, dependent on the observer who measures it.
And so it is precisely the wearer of a mechanical watch who is also scientifically up to date by recognizing and appreciating it as something very personal.
Precision is the respect for mechanics. Mechanics is respect for accuracy. Precision is respect for time. Punctuality is the common respect for time. Similarity is shared time. Time is not divisible, but to have it twice is a wonderful experience. To divide it with a mechanical timepiece makes its inevitable passing present through its ticking. Being able to consciously enjoy something so ephemeral makes time something special in its passing. Because it is measurable, but not repeatable. That is the appeal of the mechanical clock: to make something irretrievable audible and thus tangible. Mechanics is the respect for time that has become precision.
